Summary
When we played the original Castlevania games, we loved the exploration. When we played Dark Souls, we loved the combat. With the Witcher 3, we loved the emotional storytelling. In classic RPGs, we loved the character development. And with Ori and the Will of the Wisps, we loved the art style.
We wanted to draw and expand upon these inspirations. To make a new kind of game that’s a side-scroller, but with rich storytelling and a deep, RPG-like character development system. That has epic Soulslike action, but sleek Metroidvania-style exploration. All in a way that feels like a natural, cohesive gaming experience.
That’s how Mandragora was born.
Mandragora is powered by the Unreal Engine.
We’re aiming to release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch simultaneously in 2023. Later, we’ll also look into potentially expanding that list to include older-gen and upcoming consoles.
Mandragora will have no platform exclusivity, whether that’s with one particular console manufacturer or one PC distribution platform.

Face the devastating effects of Entropy as you journey through this world in decline. Explore the mysterious dark halls of Braer Castle, speak to terrified residents of the crumbling Crimson City, befriend skilled artisans, face deadly enemies, and make harsh moral choices that will shape the future of this world.
There are many sides to every story, and multiple endings to every great tale told… How will your journey end?
Entropy
The boundary between our world and Entropy is fading. With the legendary Witch Lantern in hand, jump headfirst into the dark & dangerous realm of Entropy – all to try and take your world back from the monsters.
Explore Entropic Corridors, parts of the world already consumed by Entropy. While your time there may be limited at first, as you become stronger and upgrade your Witch Lantern, you can stay within it longer and fight back the expansion of its dark power.
To upgrade your Witch Lantern, you must first find mandrake root, a rare and coveted material with mysterious ties to Entropy. With this, you’ll gain access to the Witch Lantern’s own Talent Tree, where you can learn valuable Talents for your time in Entropy; such as the ability to kill enemies to gain vital seconds, gain Bonus Damage, or move more quickly once your Life Aura starts to deplete.
Challenging Combat
Combat in Mandragora is visceral, skill-driven, and incorporates many Soulslike elements.
During your travels in Mandragora, you’ll be battling many fearsome foes: 60+ enemies, 10 deadly Bosses, and 5 Mini Bosses.
These range from simple, mindless zombies and ghouls, to enemies with more complex and challenging move-sets, like the grim Caretaker, or the Vampire of Braer Island.
You’ll find that fighting against them is challenging but fair; they punish you quickly if you make mistakes, but once you learn their attacks and behaviors, you’ll stand a good chance against them.
Each enemy you'll encounter will have a specific set of offensive and defensive abilities that will often make for unique and deadly combos; like the Striga's vicious Lacerate and nimble Dodge, or the Vampire Assassin's sneaky Shadow Step and poisonous Dagger Throw.
Defeated enemies drop Essence which can be used to level up your character, learn new active Abilities and passive Talents, or upgrade the Witch Lantern. When you die – which may happen quite often – you will respawn at the last checkpoint. In these instances, all unused essence is dropped, but it can be recovered.

Developing your character the way you want to play it is one of the most rewarding aspects of classic RPGs. We want to make Mandragora a similarly deep and rewarding experience.
Character development in Mandragora consists of several different interconnected layers that form a rich and complex system.
Choose from unique Classes
When you start a new game, you’ll be able to pick from various starting classes that differ not only in aesthetics, but in core gameplay features as well.
Vanguard
This class is the perfect choice if you like raw physical strength, massive shields or brutal two handed weapons!
Spellbinder
If you’re looking for a character that can master even the dark energies of Entropy, pick the Spellbinder, a mysterious magic-user who can wreak havoc from long distances.
Larcenist
If you prefer a sneakier approach, you can choose to play as a Larcenist – a quick and agile character in light armor that uses poisons and combo attacks to overcome their foes.
Heretic
This is the class for you if you want to play as a fierce mid-range warrior who combines fire magic with one-handed maces.

Customize your gear
As your adventure takes you to far-off lands, you’ll find ancient spellbooks, parchments, and mysterious NPCs, from which you will learn dozens of Active Abilities: Fire, Chaos and Nature Spells, and various Combat Moves.
You’ll be able to find – or craft – various weapons, armor, clothes, magically enhanced jewelry and quick-use items. Each of them will have different properties, making them optimal for different character classes and playstyles.

Use the Attributes that suit your playstyle
Character and Enemy Attributes affect every attack, movement, spell, and skill performed in Mandragora. You are able to customize your character to fit your playstyle through Items, Skills, and the Talent Tree.
Attributes increase your different combat statistics and resources. They also increase the damage of your specific attacks and skills.
- Main Attributes – Constitution, Defense, Strength, Dexterity, Vigor, Power, Spirit, Knowledge, Endurance
- Secondary Attributes – Poise, Stagger, Critical Chance, Spell Critical Chance, Critical Damage, Armor, Equip Load, Attack Speed, Movement Speed
- Resistances – Fire, Order, Poison, Bleed, Physical, Chaos, Frost, Wyld, Void
- Resources – Health, Stamina, Mana, Adrenaline, Combo Point
Discover the power of Status Effects
Status Effects are chance-based debuffs applied by various attacks and skills. Their application chance can be increased by Talents and Items. Elements and their corresponding Status effect:
- Physical damage – Bleed
- Wyld damage – Poison
- Fire damage – Burn
- Chaos damage – Weakness
- Frost damage – Freeze
Regardless of their damage type, certain attacks and skills can apply Slow or Stun as well.
Grow your skills with the Talent Tree
As your character levels up, you’ll gain access to the Talent Tree. Here, you can spend talent points on basic attributes, such as knowledge, strength or endurance, as well as on unique Talents, which can increase your power, give you new ways to fight, or even change your playstyle completely.
Some examples of Passive Talents are Finish ’Em!, which adds a 3rd, more powerful attack to your basic attack sequence; Ultimate Chaos, which offers the chance to automatically activate a randomly selected Chaos spell after each cast; and Vengeance, which deals all damage received back to the attacker.
Mix and match Talents to suit your playstyle
Although each of the starting classes have their own separate part of the Talent Tree, these parts are connected to each other, so you’ll be able to move anywhere on the tree freely, and even create mixed classes:
- A Heretic that combines their fire magic with forbidden blood magic to purge evil from the face of the earth?
- A Spellbinder in heavy armor, with a magically enhanced, robust battle hammer in their hands?
This will all be possible in Mandragora!
Deadly Bosses!
Challenge unique, fearsome bosses in the world of Mandragora, meeting a variety of beasts during your travels, from fearsome Dragons to cunning Vampire Lords.
Each boss has their own unique offensive and defensive abilities that need to be learned before you stand a chance against them in battle. Make sure you pay close attention to their patterns and behaviors if you want to defeat them!
And New Game+!
Once you’ve beaten the game and are on the hunt for your next challenge, NG+ awaits.
Start over with a brand new adventure while keeping your Items and Talents, exploring where different story choices can lead you – all while contending with brand new NG+ Difficulty Levels.

Development progress & status
We’ve been working on the game since 2018. Five people built the foundations, and after years of slow team expansion, Mandragora is now coming together nicely.
Core elements are in place; many bosses are finished, multiple other enemies are completely implemented, and most classes and their skills are designed and are now being refined. The campaign structure is set, the major story arc and main character storylines are written, three environments are completed, and the rest of the chapters are well underway.
Producing all the details in Mandragora’s 2.5D art, 3D animations, and complex lighting needs way more people than if it were a 2D game. The funds raised and the attention gained by this campaign will greatly help our further recruitment efforts.
We plan to release in the second half of 2023. We can’t commit to an actual date yet, because it highly depends on the ongoing growth of our team. But we do commit to keeping backers in the loop on where we’re at.

The dream for what would later become this game was born during a trip to Ireland taken by our two creative leads all the way back in 2016.
In 2018, after several months of ideation, based on inspiration from our favorite games and from the epic dark fantasy aesthetic of Irish folklore, our two travelers – who worked as artists and game designers at Primal Game Studio – set things in motion.
And now, our growing project team is already home to 25+ awesome people within Primal Game Studio and around the world.
